A  Journey to Independence: The Success Story of R. Vijaykumar

In a small, humble home behind the Earikarai Bus Stop in Thiruvallur, lives R. Vijaykumar, a young man with a mental disability. Life dealt a heavy blow when his father passed away, leaving Vijaykumar and his mother, R. Dhanalakshmi, to fend for themselves. Dhanalakshmi, a daily wage worker, struggled to make ends meet. Her meagre earnings were barely enough to cover necessities, let alone the additional costs of Vijaykumar’s medical care. With no other family support, they faced a grim and uncertain future.

Amidst this hardship, hope arrived through the Tamilnadu Differently Abled Federation Charitable Trust (TNDFCT). TNDFCT identified Vijayakumar’s situation and offered a lifeline. Recognizing his potential and the need for sustainable support, TNDFCT gave him a pushcart to start a juice shop. They also gave him Rs. 10,000 to procure the fruits and equipment necessary for his new venture. To ensure his success, TNDFCT organized a three-day entrepreneurial training program to equip him with the skills needed to run his business effectively.

This initiative was part of the livelihood support project aimed at empowering individuals with disabilities, generously supported by Ford Motors Pvt. Ltd. With his mother’s unwavering support, Vijayakumar embraced this opportunity with determination and enthusiasm.

Today, Vijayakumar runs a thriving juice shop, earning approximately Rs. 600 daily. This newfound independence has transformed his life. No longer confined to a life of financial instability and dependence, Vijayakumar now enjoys a sense of pride and accomplishment. The juice shop not only provides a steady income but also brings joy and purpose to his days.

Vijayakumar and his mother are profoundly grateful to TNDFCT and Ford Motors for their support. They credit this initiative with giving them a chance to break free from the cycle of poverty and live a dignified, self-sufficient life.
